This cluster equips students with essential skills for evaluating historical writing, constructing arguments, and analyzing evidence. A special benefit of this cluster is partaking in a small, faculty-led seminar on literary analysis, as well as participation in the Berkeley Connect mentoring program. While building an intellectual community in these small classes, students will also fulfill the Arts & Literature breadth requirement.
Course Descriptions
- ENGLISH 45C: Literature in English: The Mid-19th through the Mid-20th Century, 4 Units. Historical survey of literature in English: the mid-19th through the mid-20th century.
- ENGLISH 90: Practices of Literary Study, 4 Units. This writing-focused course is a small, faculty-led seminar on the practice and discipline of literary analysis. It is meant for all students who seek an introductory literary course in which the skills of textual analysis and critical writing are central, including those who may wish to major in English. Focusing on the close study of a few works, rather than a survey of many, the seminar will help students develop college-level skills for interpreting literature. The seminar will develop students’ ability to read closely and communicate their analysis effectively.
- ENGLISH 98BC: Berkeley Connect, 1 Unit. Berkeley Connect is a mentoring program, offered through various academic departments, that helps students build intellectual community. Over the course of a semester, enrolled students participate in regular small-group discussions facilitated by a graduate student mentor (following a faculty-directed curriculum), meet with their graduate student mentor for one-on-one academic advising, attend lectures and panel discussions featuring department faculty and alumni, and go on field trips to campus resources. Students are not required to be declared majors in order to participate.Course may be repeated for credit.
