Understanding Through Letters & Numbers: Global Studies, Math & Spanish or Chinese (13 Units)

This cluster offers foundational coursework for students interested in global studies or language majors. Through Statistics 2, students develop essential quantitative skills, while the Introduction to Global Studies course explores international development, conflict, and peace. Language proficiency is also emphasized, with courses in Elementary Chinese and Spanish, introducing students to key global languages and their cultural contexts. This cluster prepares students for critical engagement with global issues and fulfills Social & Behavioral Sciences and International Studies breadths.

Course Descriptions

STAT 2: Introduction to Statistics (4 Units)

Population and variables. Standard measures of location, spread and association. Normal approximation. Regression. Probability and sampling. Interval estimation. Some standard significance tests.

GLOBAL C10A: Introduction to Global Studies (4 Units)

This course is designed as an introduction to Global Studies. Using a social science approach, the course prepares students to think critically about issues of international development, conflict, and peace in a variety of societies around the world. As such, it provides students with a basic theoretical introduction to the impact of global interaction as well as an opportunity to explore such interaction in a variety of case studies.

CHINESE 1A: Elementary Chinese (5 Units)

The course is designed for students who are of non-Chinese origin and were not raised in a Chinese-speaking environment; or who are of Chinese origin but do not speak Chinese and whose parents do not speak Chinese. The course develops beginning learners’ functional language ability—the ability to use Mandarin Chinese in linguistically and culturally appropriate ways at the beginning level. It helps students acquire communicative competence in Chinese while sensitizing them to the links between language and culture.

SPANISH 1: Elementary Spanish – First Semester (5 Units)

Beginners’ course. Not open to students who have completed more than two years of high school Spanish, or to native speakers.
